In a prime position on Raekoja Plats in Tallinn, Kaerajaan serves “Modern Estonian Food”. This is actually a rarity in Tallinn where it seems that restaurants cater for every other cuisine except Estonian.
Kaerjaan is a new restaurant with a modern decor set in an historic building on the square. There is outdoor seating on the terrace and they even supply blankets for chilly days. It was lunchtime when I headed to Kaerjaan, and despite it being summer it was overcast and windy and so MTV boyfriend and I both opted for soup. MTV boyfriend had the roast pumpkin, smoked cream cheese and hazlenut soup. I went for the tomato soup with Estonian seafood and thyme flavoured rye bread.
MTV boyfriend´s soup was slightly too heavy handed on the cream cheese, however my tomato and seafood soup was perfect. The broth was light but tasty and garnished with spring onions and small pieces of fish. The accompanying rye bread was satisfyingly dense and sprinkled with fresh thyme. If Estonian food is all like that served at Kaerajaan, there should be more of it.
