The Westin’s Eclair Affair Afternoon Tea

Macarons? So 2013.  With so many afternoon teas in Melbourne, The Westin has set itself apart with an eclair themed afternoon tea.  I was invited to try out this Eclair Affair with Joyce from Mel Hot or Not, the only person I know who is more obsessed with afternoon tea than me.

Served in the lobby bar area of The Westin overlooking Swanston Street the Eclair Affair afternoon tier arrives on a contemporary looking silver and black stand.  There are eclairs all round with even the savoury row of sandwiches made using eclairs filled with folds of ham or creamy goats cheese.

The only thing on the stand which isn’t an eclair is the tier of scones.  Of course scones are compulsory for afternoon tea and The Westin dishes up two – one vanilla and one fruit – with cream and strawberry jam.  They weren’t the highest scones but had a good fluffy texture.

The highlight was the tier of eclairs.  The buttery choux pastry was delicious and some of the more unusual flavours, like the pistachio and fig eclair, proved to be the most delicious.

The afternoon tea comes with a choice of a glass of Domain Chandon sparkling,  a Vittoria coffee, hot chocolate or Jing tea. I tried out a tall glass of iced tea and my own teapot of licorice tea.

If you’re looking for an afternoon tea with a twist, The Westin is the place to head for.  But if you are a traditionalist where afternoon tea is concerned I’d recommend somewhere like The Langham or Cristina Rae instead.

  1. That looks like a fun way to spend an afternoon! I love the Westin’s Martini bar and the lobby bar too. I’m a big fan of choux pastry and eclairs, so I’m sure I’d love the afternoon tea! 🙂

  2. Sarah – The Westin is actually getting rid of the martini bar to make it a function space and more room for afternoon teas which is sad to hear as I loved the martini bar as well.

  3. Wow sounds like a fabulously indulgent treat. The full cake tier looks very generous for two people too!
