Just a quick post today as I’m far too tired thanks to the onset of Daylight Savings. But I had to share what I think might be Melbourne’s best scones. Regular readers will know that Meat-and-Three-Veg is a scone fantatic (yes it’s one of his endearing little quirks) and so I’ve eaten my way through mountains of scones, jam and cream through Cornwall, Devon and of course Melbourne.
A tip from my friend Joyce led me to Jam and Cream in Heidelberg. The shop front doesn’t look like much from outside but it has bucket of charm once you are inside with vintage scales, decoupage covered tables and doilies on every surface. There’s a courtyard out the back covered in astro turf with colourful umbrellas, a lolly pink caravan and even some resident chooks (a hit with kids of all ages).
It’s a little bit shabby but I liked the quirkiness of the place. Back to the scones though. There are 14 different types on the menu. They are made to order and are piping hot when served. The scones were so light and fluffy that I really think they are the best I have had in Melbourne. I loved the heavy dusting of icing sugar as well and slightly tart homemade runny jam (I even bought a jar to take away).
One tip: Jam and Cream is more tea rooms than cafe so you are better off ordering tea to accompany your scones here rather than the coffee which isn’t great. But who cares when the scones are this good?

Kids: Welcome. There is a kids menu, small size tables and chairs and lots for them to look at and play with.
Damage: Reasonable. $13.95 for two scones and a hot drink. There’s also a bargain afternoon tea for $30 a person.
