I love nothing more than a cooking class so the closure of the cooking school at Queen Vic market earlier this year was a sad day. There is a temporary replacement though and it’s even bigger and better. Opening last week I was invited to try out Fisher & Paykel’s pop up cooking school “The Social Kitchen” with Peter Rowland catering right in the heart of the market.
The Social Kitchen is here for six month and includes a Chefs Collective, headed up by Shane Delia, who are taking four-hour Master Classes twice a week, with ‘cook and shop’ classes the other days. There’s a whole heap of interesting classes from Vietnamese street food to how to cook the perfect turkey.
Although temporary no expensive has been spared in the fitout. Rows of gleaming work stations and cook tops mean this is a cooking school where you actually “do” rather than just watch. From experience I’ve found this is certainly the best way to learn different techniques.
Our class involved making a paella under the watchful eye of Peter Rowland executive chef Neil Rock and Shane Delia who was mainly busy disrupting the cooking! Classes have a relaxed atmosphere and cooking is done the way I like it, with a glass of wine in hand. Then at the end of the class you all sit down to eat what you’ve created.
I’ve got two double passes to The Social Kitchen to give away. They are valued at $135 a ticket ($270 for the pair). To win one of the double passes to The Social Kitchen:
1. Leave a comment below listing the class you want to attend; and
2. Sign up for the free fortnightly Gourmet Chick newsletter (ignore this step if you’ve already signed up).
The competition closes at 5pm Australian Eastern Standard time on Tuesday 25 November. The two winners will be selected using random.org and will be announced on Gourmet Chick on Wednesday 26 November.
Gourmet Chick was a guest of The Social Kitchen at a trial evening.
