Jimbaran Bay is famous in Bali for its white sandy beach and seafood restaurants but it’s also home to one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed at: Belmond’s Jimbaran Puri. Off a busy road and down a narrow lane the entrance to the hotel is unassuming but step through the huge wooden doors and you are in another world.
Reception is housed in a large open air pavilion overlooking a water lily filled pond. From here you can look straight out to the hotel’s huge main pool which sits by the edge of the sand of Jimbaran Bay.
There are no standard hotel rooms here. Instead each guest stays in their own cottage or villa which you reach by golf buggy through the Jimbaran Puri’s beautiful tropical gardens. The villas feel like your own beautiful Balinese home. Enter a traditional doorway to find your own private swimming pool and pavilion for lounging.
The villa has its own living room area with doors which close to make it a separate room (perfect for families). Then there’s the main bedroom with a King size bed piled with fluffy white pillows and soft sheets. The bathroom is dramatic: lined with black stone and you can step straight from the shower into a stunning outdoor shower depending on your inclination.
On the technology front there’s two televisions, a Nespresso machine and Bose sound system with free wifi throughout the resort which is great for posting pictures of yourself lying beach side or poolside with a drink (sorry friends and family for the holiday spam).
Breakfast each morning is a real highlight thanks to the amazing breakfast buffet. There’s a range of cereal, pastries, meats and cheeses and there’s also eggs cooked to order along with thick, fluffy banana pancakes. What’s a 5 star hotel without a quality club sandwich? Jimbaran Puri’s delivers a triple decker treat of plump chicken breast, crunchy bacon and crisp lettuce.
The hotel hosts regular displays of Kecak dancing accompanied by Jimbaran Puri’s take on a street food market. It’s pretty spectacular to sit beachside and listen to the chanting of the Kecak choir while choosing from different stalls offering satay BBQed to order, a whole Balinese suckling pig and soto ayam – a traditional Balinese chicken soup.
The Balinese are famous for their hospitality and the staff at Jimbaran Puri are no exception. From the gardeners to the waiting staff they could not have been more friendly and accommodating. Jimbaran Puri is the sort of hotel you start planning your return trip to before you’ve even left.
Gourmet Travel Tips
- I flew to Bali on JetStar for $800 return.
- Belmond Jimaran Puri is only 15 minutes drive from the airport (you can see the planes taking off from the beach) and a taxi is about $10 USD.
- Kids are welcome and the staff were very accommodating of my almost 2 year old daughter. They can provide cots, high chairs and beach toys. The big expanses of grass and sand along with a shallow pool area makes it very child friendly.
- I spent my time lounging by the pools and beach and Seminyak’s shops, restaurants and night life are only a short cab ride away.
Gourmet Chick was invited to stay at the Belmond Jimbaran Puri.
