Over the past year I’ve spent far too much at a certain Melbourne clothes store called Mister Zimi. I love the bright, colourful prints which make you feel like it’s Summer even when it clearly isn’t. So I was delighted to discover that the designers and owners of Mister Zimi, Zoe and Jimi Paul, have a villa in Bali which they rent out on Airbnb.
The villa is just outside of Seminyak in the adjoining suburb of Umalas and has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a swimming pool and best of all the most fun, colourful interior, just like the Mister Zimi clothes.
I rented the Mister Zimi villa for a week and loved the chance to get a feel for what it would be like to live in Bali. Each morning I’d walk down the road to a nearby cafe for coffee and Bali’s best croissants (Monsieur Spoon in case you’re wondering). Then I’d spend the morning lazing by the pool or hanging out in the garden. I often headed out for lunch and spent the afternoon getting a massage or having drinks by the beach before going out for dinner.
The Mister Zimi villa is very well equipped in terms of cooking equipment but besides making breakfast and meals for my daughter there I mainly ate out. What are holidays about after all?
While the Mister Zimi villa isn’t like some of the holiday villas in Bali where you have an onsite team who cook and clean for you, there is a villa manager, the lovely Komang, who comes in every day to clean the villa and can help out with shopping and laundry.
I was slightly concerned before arriving that the Mister Zimi villa might be too far from the action in Seminyak but this wasn’t an issue at all. It was a $5 cab ride in to Seminyak itself or a 20 minute walk and I discovered that even if you stayed right in the middle of Seminyak itself you would still end up catching lots of cabs as it is so sprawling and cabs are cheap.
The Mister Zimi villa is perfect if you have children because Zoe and Jimi have their own kids so the villa is totally equipped for little ones. There’s a proper pool fence (rare in Bali), a kids room with a cot and single bed, a pram, high chair, baby bath, steriliser and best of all, lots of toys and kids books. Mini Gourmet Chick was in seventh heaven. My only concern was whether it was just too weird and stalkerish to dress in my Mister Zimi clothes while staying at the Mister Zimi villa.
Details: Mister Zimi villa, Umalas, Bali, Indonesia.
Damage: Pricey. About $180 a night. We had the villa just for us but it could sleep two families which would make the cost a lot cheaper.
