I make a yearly trip to Canberra for work and the standard hotel my work books is the Rex Hotel because it’s cheap and has wifi. But this year I had to stay extend my stay at the last minute and Rex Hotel was booked out. A quick search uncovered availability at one of Canberra’s wave of hip new hotels, East Hotel, for the same price as my decidedly retro room at Rex.
My room at East Hotel was more like a small apartment. It had a living room, kitchen (complete with some basic cooking equipment, bathroom and separate bedroom. There was also a balcony but the weather was far too chilly for me to venture out onto it. All that space and the ability to cook for yourself was a bit wasted on me for a one night stay but would be great if you were in Canberra for a longer period.
Nice touches include the inclusion of free and fast wifi, a lovely lounge area in the lobby of the hotel with complementary books, magazines and lollies, and a helpful guide to Canberra and the local area in every room.
The breakfast buffet at East Hotel includes little pots of Bircher muesli and fresh juices as well as eggs and bacon. Unfortunately it only includes machine made coffee not the good stuff essential for a coffee snob like me.
East Hotel’s location in Manuka is actually quite convenient if you want to be near Canberra’s main night life and it’s also a nice walk, jog or bike ride to Lake Griffith.
Details: East Hotel, 69 Canberra Avenue, Kingston ACT Australia 2604 (Ph (02) 6295 6925)
Damage: Reasonable. My room was $200 a night (same price as the more basic Hotel Rex)
