The dining scene in Geelong has really improved over the last year with some great new openings on the horizon. Just to show how the City of Dreams is trying to do it bigger and better, Little Creatures has opened a brewery here that’s on a much larger scale than the Little Creatures Dining Hall in Melbourne.
Located in an old mill, there’s a great outdoor beer garden festooned with coloured fairy lights and complete with a sand pit for kids to play in. Inside, the bar is in a converted shipping container in the middle of a huge beer hall with whitewashed walls, retro metal chairs and some prime booth seating along the far wall.
The food here is drinking food. Think pulled pork sliders, lamb ribs and of course chips (although they’re “frites” here). I recommend the corn on the cob ($9) which comes char grilled for a smoky taste and slathered with chipolote mayo and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.
The must order dish is pizza: there’s a wood fired oven blazing away and churning out pizzas with puffy bases with a slight elasticity and blackened edges. Little Creatures keeps things simple with just a handful of toppings on each pizza like the spiced lamb, zucchini and goats cheese ($22). This just erred on the right side of fiery.
But to be honest it’s really all about the beer here. You can get the full Little Creatures range including some brews that I hadn’t come across before like the “Winter Solstice” and “Return of the Dread”. Serious beer geeks don’t regard Little Creatures as a boutique brewer anymore but if you’re after great beers and in a place with a relaxed and friendly feel to it, the Little Creatures Brewery is perfect.
Details: Little Creatures Brewery, Cnr Fyans and Swanston Street, Geelong (Ph (03) 5202 4009)
Kids: This space is perfect for kids with a sandpit and lots of room to run around. Strangely there are no high chairs so bring your own if you have little ones.
