There’s no Shake Shack in Australia but we are seeing plenty of homages to the cult US burger chain. There’s Betty’s Burgers in Noosa, Jack’s Burgers in Sydney and now Royal Stacks in Melbourne.
Royal Stacks has opened its first store (I’m sure there will be more) right in the heart of Melbourne’s business district in Collins street. It’s a big operation with a neon pink burger sign and a living wall of plants. I’ve visited a few times now because it’s convenient to work and I do rate the burgers. They’re served in a soft, sweet bun. The classic is the single stack ($8.50) with one beef patty from freshly minced beef, tomato, lettuce, cheddar, special sauce and pickles.
But my favourite is the bacon bacon ($13.50) because everything is better with bacon of course. It’s a double stack and the bacon addition just adds a bit more clout to the single stack which can be light on. To accompany your burger there are crisp, salty thin fries or chunky tater tots.
Like all the Shake Shack homages, Royal Stacks serves frozen custard which is like a denser version of ice-cream. The supplier is 7 Apples and I can recommend the salted caramel which is the right balance of salty and sweet.
I think the best burgers in town are still at Huxtaburger but I can’t say I’m complaining about Royal Stacks opening up.
