It’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival madness at the moment with so much great stuff happening all over Melbourne. One event which is always great is the Flemington Grazing Trail and Cellar Door which is on this weekend as part of Super Saturday raceday.
I was invited to a sneak preview this week to check out some of the great producers and chefs who will be at the event. Lunch was served right in the middle of Flemington’s famous mounting yard. Created by chef Robin Wickens of The Royal Mail Hotel lunch started with a gin and tonic in granita form perfect for the sweltering weather.
Next we shared big platters of local flathead baked and scattered with broccolini and smoked butter. Alongside this was beef rib eye from the Royal Mail hotel on a bed of malted farro from Mount Zero.
It was served with the sort of garden tomato salad which makes the water bomb supermarket tomatoes taste like they are from another planet.
For the sweet end of the meal there was parfait made from sweet corn alongside a scoop of sheep’s milk ice cream drizzled with salted caramel and scattered with popcorn. The parfait was overly dense but the corn was just sweet enough to work as a dessert.
We drank Wolf Blass wines including a delicious buttery 2015 chardonnay and a gutsy Grey Label 2013 shiraz.
The best part though is that all of this and more awaits you at Flemington on Saturday.
