Melbourne Food and Wine Festival kicked off last night with a launch party at the Urban Dairy which is the festival’s hub at Queensbridge square on Southbank. The good news is that entry is free to the Urban Dairy for the entire festival.
Right on the banks of the Yarra the Urban Dairy has a cheesemonger and ice-cream stand manned by cult ice cream makers including New York’s Big Gay Ice-Cream.
At the festival launch the tiniest little burgers you ever did see showed off some of that quality cheese. The cheese shop is open every day of the festival showcasing local and international cheeses.
What’s a dairy without milk? In this case strawberry and cream flavoured milk. Urban Dairy features a milk bar which promises a “nod to 1960’s nostalgia”. There’s also quality coffee and alcohol on offer which is not so 1960’s.
Big Gay Ice Cream are serving up different combinations for the first few days of the festival. This Tivoli Road donut filled with ice cream was the cult food sensation of the night. Look out for the Big Gay Ice Cream Tim Tam slam coming up soon and this residency will be followed by Gelato Messina and Pierre’s.
Gourmet Chick was a guest of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
