Chandon in the City: The Emerson Rooftop

It’s not all just cocktails and dance floor action at The Emerson. This month Chandon is taking over The Emerson’s rooftop for “Chandon in the City” and I got invited along for a sneak preview of what’s on offer.  There’s fabulous Chandon sparkling and wines along with a menu based on that served at Domaine Chandon’s Yarra Valley restaurant Greenpoint.

The menu is divided into small and large plates all designed to share.  When you think Chandon the classic combination is a glass of Chandon vintage with oysters and this is exactly what I was served when I stepped out of the lift onto The Emerson rooftop. Tick tick.

We sat down at long tables filled with plates of creamy burrata and heirloom tomatoes and soft folds of cured ocean trout teamed with aniseedy fennel and a dollop of creme fraiche.

For serious drinking and snacking options there’s also a classic charcuterie board piled with terrine rillettes, cured meats and cornichons.

The charcuterie board pairs beautifully with the light and dry 2015 Chandon Pinot Noir rosé.

Bang on trend options include Chandon’s take on the lobster roll which is teamed with cucumber, spiced mayo and crisps and sliders filled with slow cooked beef cheek, caramelised onion and gruyere cheese.

From the large plate sharing options the confit duck falls apart at the fork and is a perfect accompaniment to Chandon’s 2013 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir (one of my favourite wines of the night).

I also loved the baked barramundi for a lighter option.  The fish has a crisp pan fried skin with delicate flesh and is served with bok choy and coriander giving the dish an Asian feel.

The only dish that didn’t impress was the lemon parsley linguini dotted with clams.  The pasta was dry and gritty although this may have been due to the difficulty of cooking pasta for so many people simultaneously at the launch.

The Emerson is a fun venue to sample the Chandon food and drink experience without having to head to the Yarra Valley.  It’s the whole cellar door experience but with the sparkling city skyline as a backdrop and would be great for a group dinner or to kickstart a night out.  A shout out as well to The Wine Bluffs, Damian Callinan and Paul Calleja, who are in Melbourne for the comedy festival and performed at the preview: even if you are only a slight wine nerd these guys are hilarious. I will never look at sniffing and swirling wine the same way.
