There are so many gourmet burger shops now so it’s about time that other takeaway classic, chicken and chips, get’s an update as well. That’s where Henrietta’s Chicken shop comes in.
Open down Fulham place, a laneway in Melbourne’s CBD it specialises in rotisserie chicken cooked on a spit over coals. There’s a focus here on quality of produce so the chicken is Bannockburn free range and there’s also the option of Milawa organic chicken as well for a higher price.
You can really appreciate the top quality birds by ordering one of the chicken packs. The chickens are brined so they are juicy and served with a slight char and spot on lemon and oregano seasoning on the crispy skin. A quarter chicken is teamed with Henrietta’s rainbow coloured, lightly dressed slaw and crinkle cut chips.
It’s seriously good stuff but also not cheap. $18 is a lot for a casual place where you have to queue to order your food at the counter. The more budget option, and one that probably falls into guilty pleasure territory is the roast chicken and gravy roll ($12.50). It’s soft and sweet and very moreish.
Henrietta’s is licensed with beer and wine and there are also some pretty fun desserts of the soft serve variety. It’s too expensive to be a regular lunch option for me but if you’re feeling like posh chicken and chips nobody does it better than Henrietta’s.
