A special quirk of married life or just of being in a long term relationship is when you can predict exactly what your husband/wife/partner/significant other is going to order. As soon as I saw patatas bravas with chorizo on the menu at Mayday Coffee and Food I knew exactly what Meat-and-Three-Veg would be brunching on that day.
Mayday Coffee and Food has opened its doors just a little further down Bridge road adding to Richmond’s cafe resurgence. You should be alert not alarmed as Mayday’s look is clean and inviting – all polished concrete floors, pale timber and pops of blue and yellow from the stained glass behind the front counter.
The space is huge, seating 120 people and the menu is similarly broad. It trots around the globe from American style waffles with s’mores through to an oh-so-French Croque Madam.
The croquettes ($19) feature Scandinavian flavours in the filling of potato and cured ocean trout with a dollop of brightly coloured beetroot relish. It’s a good combination but the croquettes are disappointingly soggy inside.
The grilled chorizo and patatas bravas ($18.50) is a better option. Trust MTV to win the ordering game! The gutsy flavours are enhanced with two fried eggs and topped with a picante sauce to add kick. While the food may be a bit inconsistent there’s no such problems with the coffee as Mayday is run by the team behind Axil Coffee. There’s your standard options along with cold drip and batch brew specials.
Next time I might just steal MTV’s order. That’s what husbands are for.
