I’m a sucker for a good rom com and so absolutely loved the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Now the sequel (creatively named My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2) is out and I was invited along to a lunch at the Press Club to celebrate.
Lunch was presided over by George Calombaris who is neither fat or married but is passionate about his Greek heritage. He spoke about how he loves to reimagine classic Greek dishes in the food he serves up at The Press Club.
So it was unsurprising to start with Greek loukoumades, traditionally a honeyed dessert, reworked as puffs of savoury pastry and served with the Press Club’s signature taramasalata. This is taramasalata like you haven’t tasted before, creamy, rich and coloured white rather than the standard garish pink.
Next up Calombaris reinvented the Greek pie, serving up small puffy buns filled with tender meat. I could easily have eaten more of these.
It’s elegant food in an elegant setting. Eating at the Press Club feels like you have a seat on a luxury yacht with buttery leather curved booths ringing the intimate space and circles of gold metal decorating the ceiling.
The classic flavour combination of chicken and lemon delivered with the chicken cooked so it was still juicy and almost melted away into the thick sauce.
To finish there was the most glamorous rice pudding I’ve ever seen. The Press Club’s rizogalo comes as a pretty pink confection topped with tangy rhubarb with subtle hints of liquorice.
Petit fours have become The Press Club’s signature dish as they are served hanging on a tiny Hills Hoist clothes line in a nod to Calombaris’ childhood home. It’s nostalgic fun especially when you unclip a fluffy marshmallow from the line after it has been caramelised with a blow torch.
This is Greek food far removed from the taverna. The Press Club has really hit its straps since Calombaris moved it into a more intimate space and refined the restaurant’s focus (here’s my review of The Press Club in its former guise). Just like My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 the restaurant is proudly Greek but also thoroughly modern.
Gourmet Chick was a guest of Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is out now on DVD.
