You’ve gotta love it when another great new cafe opens in your hood. As soon as I spotted Hoppa & Joe’s fresh paint job on busy Heidelberg road I was in like a flash. This little cafe is a labour of love for owner Kirsten Taylor, former general manager of Chez Dre, as her first solo venture.
The white interior has a Scandinavian feel with pops of blue from the geometric counter that Kirsten made herself from pieces of plywood. Chef Craig Towers is cooking up some great food in the tiny kitchen.
The must order dish is the baked cauliflower and eggs ($18.50) which is bang on trend and comes in its own little cast iron dish. The cauliflower is baked until its soft and teamed with gooey cheese, oozing eggs and, in a touch of genius, crumbs of chorizo. One of my favourite breakfast dishes of the year.
The Croque Monsieur ($9.50) takes the humble ham and cheese toastie up a notch with the addition of luxuriously bubbling bechamel sauce.
A beautiful white La Marzocca coffee machine turns out quality coffee from Maling Room. My latte was smooth and creamy. It’s all in the details at Hoppa & Joe. It’s the sort of cafe that deserves to be embraced by more than just locals.
