Introducing QT Melbourne

Cake heaven at QT Melbourne

Say goodbye to boring, cookie cutter hotels which could be anywhere. Super cool hotel group QT has just opened its newest outpost in Melbourne where the old Greater Union cinema used to be on Russell street.  I was invited to take a sneak peek on the opening night.

Like it’s Sydney counterpart, QT Melbourne oozes old school glamour while still conveying a real personality and sense of humour (the lifts talk to you!). Walk into the lobby and soaring stairs climb past a sculpture made from piles of books to lead to the Pascale Bar and Grill.

I’m keen to go back and try out the restaurant properly but highlights on opening night were trays of briny, mineral oysters shucked to order and slices of smoky, charred Wagyu beef.

The cocktail game is strong here. I particularly loved the signature spicy pear cocktail.  QT Melbourne also has its own patisserie “The Cake Shop” which serves up divine eclairs for a treat of the non-alcoholic variety.

Sadly I didn’t get to stay the night but a tour of the rooms revealed some seriously swish design alongside some very quirky occupants. Inspired by New York’s Sleep No More each room presented a different tableau from a gorilla lounging in the bathtub to a live tattoo taking place.

The rooms are moody and sophisticated with matt black tiling and fittings setting the tone.  I couldn’t resist checking out the mini bars which are well stocked with some local treats from Castlemaine Rock to Chocamama chocolates.

Look out Melbourne, the days of the beige and boring hotel are over.
