I’m always attracted by a good sense of humour (that’s GSOH to you) and even more so when I come across it in a hotel. From a welcome cocktail suggestion to a cheeky elevator playlist QT Sydney is the sort of place that makes you laugh as it wows you.
Located in the old Gowings building in the heart of Sydney’s CBD the hotel retains the heritage features of building with the opulent entrance taking you up to the more expansive lobby. That’s where the cheeky elevators come into play with the playlist matching the number of people in the lift. When I got in by myself I was serenaded with Elvis Presley and “Are you lonely tonight”, add another person and it’s “You’ve got a friend” then if the lift fills up it’s Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” to get the party started. Slightly disturbing but very funny.
The rooms retain the height and scale of the building but are modern and bold. My room was certainly not your standard beige box. The designers here are not afraid to use colour in the form of a striking red bed head and black furnishings. There’s texture as well with a faux fur rug to snuggle up with.
The mini bar here is next level and includes some pretty funny things like notepaper shaped like salami along with very sensible additions like decent wine. I was particularly won over by the provision of all the ingredients to make an espresso martini complete with cocktail shaker. Bottoms up!
The restaurant at QT Sydney is also not your average hotel restaurant and is a destination in it’s own right. I was invited to eat there for my visit and while I’ve been here before I was just as impressed on this visit with my simple meal of Tuna Nicoise QT style with thick tuna steak just seared and a soft poached egg providing a dressing for the salad.
Shout out as well to the deconstructed Eton mess style dessert with sweet fresh strawberries and crumbly meringue.
But to be honest I couldn’t wait to get back to my room to indulge in some serious relaxation in the stand alone bath which dominates the all black bathroom. The thoughtful provision of a packet of bath soak (why don’t more hotels do this?) made my evening’s plans a no brainer. A stay at QT Sydney turned what was just a quick overnight work trip into what felt like a mini break. Charming and quirky QT Sydney should be top of your list for a Sydney getaway.
