Melbourne’s got a brand new hotel which has just opened in the Docklands. Four Points by Sheraton is bringing a touch of luxury to the still mainly undeveloped far end of the Docklands and I was invited to check in for an overnight stay. Sitting on the balcony at the Lakeside villas at Crittenden Estate feels almost like being on a boat. The villas are built out over the lake on stilts so the water (and resident duck population) is right at your feet. Out of the corner of your eye you can glimpse vines stretching to the horizon.
I don’t see much point in travelling to a new country and then staying in a big chain hotel that could be anywhere in the world. A great holiday can often come down to staying at a small, independent hotel which gives you a taste of life in the country before you even set food
Why doesn’t every hotel have an unlimited lollie, snack and ice-cream bar? It’s a question I found myself asking after staying at the Naumi Liora hotel right in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown. It was so nice to come back to this beautiful boutique hotel after sightseeing and get a snack or decent coffee.
Sometimes the last day of a holiday can be a bit of a drag. I often start remembering the big pile of things to do that will have mounted up back at work and that holiday feeling all too quickly evaporates even before you’ve hopped on the plane home.

Mr MTV and I just celebrated our second wedding anniversary. We marked our first wedding anniversary in Brazil but this year we were not quite so exotic and decided to stick closer to home in Melbourne. While overseas jet setting was off our list we splashed out by staying a night at the same hotel
