With no need for a time machine you can experience life in a gentler time when you step through the doors at Treacle in the East End. Pick your way through the beautiful blooms of the Columbia Road flower market and enter into Treacle’s world of nostalgic kitchenware and and exquisitely decorated cup cakes.
Grandma may have raised an eyebrow at some of the prices of the kitchenware in Treacle but there is no denying that the products selected are enough to make a girl go weak at the knees. I was delighted to spy copies for sale of the Hungry Girls’ Cookbook a handmade and designed cookbook made by a group of talented Melbourne chicks.
The refreshments on offer are limited to a selection of traditional English treats such as jammy dodgers and layer cakes. Don’t try asking for one of those fancy coffee drinks at Treacle the only thing on offer is “builders tea” a traditional style brew served milky white. However top billing goes to the cup cakes which line the windows and counter. Available in an assortment of sizes the tiny little bite sized cakes provide a delicate sugary hit without the guilt trip. I still think that Hummingbird sells the best cup cakes in town but Treacle certainly delivers on the cute factor (which is not usually a criteria to be applied to food, however I have to make an exception in the case of cup cakes). My only complaint is that there is nowhere to sit down and rest your feet as you nibble away on your cakes.
