Melbourne’s blockbuster Mammoth Cafe

Yes I will drive across town just to go to a cafe, if it’s a cafe that Loren and Jamie McBride are behind.  They’re the movers and shakers behind Pillar of Salt, Touchwood and Barry and Mammoth Cafe in Armadale is their latest offering.

Blueberry muffin Mammoth cafe style

Mammoth is located in a funny little triangular shaped building which is all white and bright thanks to large windows framed by duck egg blue shades.  The place has a Scandi feel to it blonde wood tables and with a silver Synesso coffee machine in pride of place churning out creamy lattes along with filters and cold brews.

The prettiest dish on the breakfast menu has to be the coconut yoghurt custard ($14.50).  It’s sweet but not saccharine with a combination of dried, freeze dried and fresh strawberries, shards of meringue and crunches of buckwheat and wattleseed granola.

But it must be Mammoth’s egg and bacon popcorn ($6) that’s the most talked about cafe dish in town.  It’s pure genius to combine the three things and I can’t believe nobody else has done this before.  This is only a side dish and you’ll definitely want to order it.

It’s best to head here on a weekday as the queues are a little out of control on the weekend. Once again the McBrides have a sure fire hit on their hands.
