I’m a North of the river girl but it doesn’t take much to get me to cross to the South side, particularly the promise of an amazing brunch. I had heard a few good things about newly opened Sth Central in South Yarra, particularly from MTV who had a great dinner there recently, so was psyched to be invited there to try out the daytime menu.
Sth Central is right next to South Yarra station and the light filled interior transforms into a cosy restaurant at night time thanks to the use of moody, dark colours.
It’s run by the Tommy Collins team (of Little Ox and Hawk and Hunter) and Leeroy Smith, former front of house at the Stokehouse. So it’s no surprise to see a menu featuring clever brunch dishes with some restaurant standard cooking. The star dish of the daytime menu is the ‘brreakfast gnocchi’ which features gnocchi fried until it is golden and crispy and topped with smoked salmon tartare made in the restaurant’s Inka charcoal oven and a runny poached egg ($21). This has to be one of the best breakfast dishes I’ve tried all year – that fried gnocchi is seriously addictive.
A more virtuous option is the breakfast salad ($18). It includes a check list of on trend ingredients – quinoa, kale, cauliflower and pomegranate seeds – topped off with a poached egg and a dollop of labne it’s a light dish but still filling.
Coffee at Sth Central is a house blend ($3.80) and my latte was silky and refined. There’s also a great selection of pastries which Sth Central buys in from Cobb Lane.
I’m not sure why this newcomer has been flying under the radar since opening but there should be queues out the door for the breakfast gnocchi alone.
Gourmet Chick was invited to review Sth Central.
